Children love stories and they also utilize the morals. What they imbibe is values and certain behavior can be expressed with proverbs.

One can be articulately putting them through the beautiful proverbs which they can remember as a lesson for life. Again proverbs are not taxing and is an easy way to explain to them the little facts of life.

‘ Cleanliness is next to Godliness ‘ should be mentioned to children to highlight the importance of hygiene.

‘Grapes are sour’ is very well accepted by them and the next time they want a cookie they will also speed up their homework to earn the reward.

‘Slow and steady wins the race’ means that they can do their math lessons with interest and get all the stars from the school teacher.

Teach them patience by saying, ‘ Do not count your chickens before they hatch’.

If the kids are real small then make a story about Joe who had six fowls in the pen and though he would have twenty four eggs when actually only four of them hatched.

The next time the child falls in the puddle you could tell them, ‘ Look before you leap’.

For the teenager who loves to splurge one can mention, ‘ Saving for the rainy day’.

Teach them the importance of time table and timeliness with, ‘ Early to bed early to rise’.

Make them wake early in the morning and say, ‘ The early bird gets the worm’. Kids love dramatic explanations and hence they learn faster when we make a small poem or song.

Teach them the value of friends with, ‘ A friend in need is a friend indeed’. Teach them the importance of friendship and to value the time spent with friends.

‘ Charity begins at home’ is a wonderful idea to exemplify at home. Proverbs are also a way to teach them to speak long sentences and increase their vocabulary.

The best encouragement while teaching them to write alphabets is ‘ Variety is the spice of life’.

‘One good turn deserves another.’ Is the best way to teach them to return a favour and also appreciate their tidiness while using the water colours.

‘Honesty is the best policy’ is a fundamental lesson which each child has to know.

When kids are refused an item they wail and throw a tantrum. One could firstly calm them down and mention, ‘ Do not make a mountain of a molehill’. These little things learnt early is exciting for tiny tots.

As kids are keen to hear new words and understand the meaning make it a point to teach them a proverb before bed. The next night you could summarize the earlier days proverb and make them repeat the other ones. These are fun way to slowly put them through the facts of life and wisdom.

‘Don’t put all eggs in one basket’ is an old proverb but seems the management principle in modern business. Keeping one track ideas can harm growth. Diversification leads to prosperity.

‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is another saying which directs to the fact that it is dangerous to judge someone by appearance. Smooth talkers and great lookers add to personality but values are more important in a human being.

‘Any time is no time’. Vague talks are misleading. They mean false promises and is akin to waste of time.

‘Better late than never’. This is a perfect case of realization. Procrastination has its defects but is much better than not acting on a situation.

‘A watched pot never boils’ is another saying to give space. Constant nagging or hovering over things to happen will not yield results. Patience is the key.

‘Opportunity knows once’ coupled with ‘ Time and tide wait for none’ actually means that we need to ‘ Make hay when the sun shines’.

‘If you have lemons, make lemonade’ is a mantra in today’s world. Use the best things you have and settle for something handy. ‘Something is surely better than nothing.’

‘Beauty is skin deep’. Mere pleasant looking people are the most deceptive. Values, principles and humane nature is a more reliable trait.

‘It is no use crying over spilt milk’. This means what has been done and begone is a past. Forgetting and forgive makes living easy.

‘Robbing Peter to pay Paul’ seems another way to juggle the problems of life. This causes more confusion and surely not the right way to manage.

‘When the cat is away, the mice will play,’ is the best way to explain indiscipline. Governance is necessary as without rules each one will have their own way.

‘Great minds think alike’. Success is often the meeting of ideas and marriage of like minds.

‘ Teach an old dog new tricks’. Though learning is a process in life, one cannot mend the crooked ways or negative traits of a person completely.

‘Honey catches more flies than vinegar’. This is a sure case that sweetness is preferred for being popular.

Proverbs have always been given importance in all languages. There are amazing facts that are captured with the help of proverbs. One can actually use a few phrases while giving a speech in the podium. It is very important to use matter-of-fact and appropriate proverbs. If you are in a conversation and remember to use an apt saying, do so to win appreciation. Wit is also expressed in proverbs.

‘April showers bring May flowers’ talks that change is the only thing that is constant in all our lives. One needs to go through discomfort while the outcome most times is fruitful. ‘All cats are grey in the dark’ talks about the sameness of all of us unless we prove our distinct capacities. ‘A change is as good as rest’ is so perfect when one comes rejuvenated after a holiday. A simple weekend visit to a nearby destination away from routine chores is refreshing.

‘A fault confessed is half redressed’ is another highlight to the fact that many times it is better to own up the fault. Rambling with lies will only project you as the wrong doer. Confessing your mistakes will earn you sympathy. ‘ Bad news travels fast’ has much correctness. Gossip is what many idle minds thrive on and when there is a misfortune, insolvency or a secret family problem the news spreads like wild fire. ‘ A stumble may prevent a fall’, is another prelude to the many pitfalls in life. One may feel pain at the initial shortcomings but then this is the stepping stone to success.

Friendship proverbs are interesting. ‘An empty purse frightens away friends.’ This is to describe that selfish friendship counts money. ‘A friend in need, is a friend indeed’. Most times in friendship you forget to be there during special moments but it is more important that a friend is available when you are in the dumps and a friend beside is ready to hear you out. ‘ A friend to all is a friend to none’ talks about butterflies in the social circle who fail to understand true friendship. ‘False friends are worse than open enemies’ talks about the back stabbing nature of malicious beings. Friendship is to be trusted and hence one should be wary of such false friends.

‘Constant occupation avoids temptation’, is another way of saying ‘ Idle mind is devils workshop’. It is important to work hard and strive to achieve success. ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’ is another proverb that accentuates the need to work dutifully. ‘ Hard work kills none’, is another important theme in life. ‘ Every path has a puddle’ is synonymous of determination. ‘Failure teaches success’ is another common belief that puts life into gear.
