Chinese proverbs are very interesting. The meanings are hard hitting and very much related to life and its problems. Most of them also go to enunciate the method of living. The land of rich culture certainly has a rich texture in its idioms and phrases.
There is a strong thought in ‘ Use power to curb power’ which is akin to the English proverb ‘Tit for tat’.
‘ A tiger never returns to his prey he did not finish off’ shows the valour and courage of a leader. The greatness of a ruler is to handle things in its complete form.
‘ Distant water will not quench your immediate thirst’ clearly indicates as to seize an immediate opportunity that a distant dream.
‘Better to light a candle than curse the darkness’, is another saying that throws light on the situation to offer remedy to the problem rather than increase the harmful effects of it.’
‘A crane standing amongst a flock of chickens’ is another proverb that shows how a misfit a particular situation is. ‘Crows everywhere are usually black’ is another proverb on birds that mentions the similarity in personalities.
It is highly important to upgrade ourselves with skills. For writing or eloquence it is important that we read variety. ‘After three days without reading, talking becomes flavorless’.
The play of power and success rides high in humans. This is expressed as ‘Once on a tigers back, its hard to alight’. Anger causes grief and discordant notes.
‘Never write a letter when you are angry’ is another saying that has to be followed by all of us.
‘Have a mouth as sharp as a dagger, but a heart like tofu’. This holds good to have inherent good qualities that is essential for giving.
‘ He who hurries cannot walk with dignity’ is another saying that expresses it is important to have patience. Grace is often cultivated and essential when one does not hurry up. Humility is appreciated. This is seen in ‘ If you bow at all, bow low’. ‘ If you wish to know a man, understand his words’ is much true while judging someone.
‘How can you expect to find ivory in a dogs mouth ? This is a rhetoric proverb that mentions that we are ‘ Barking up the wrong tree’.
‘Paper cannot wrap up a fire’, is another proverb that mentions the seriousness of certain circumstances.
‘ Steal a bell while ears covered’ is another saying that truth will out.
